In May 2023, WhatsApp introduced the Chat Lock feature for Android and iOS users, enhancing the security of individual chats. Notably, this feature was initially unavailable on the Web client. However, recent reports indicate that WhatsApp is actively working to extend the Chat Lock functionality to WhatsApp Web. A leaked image reveals a dedicated icon for the Chat Lock feature integrated into the redesigned sidebar for Web users.
According to insights from WABetaInfo, the Chat Lock feature on WhatsApp Web will enable users to secure specific chats with an additional layer of protection, ensuring enhanced privacy for sensitive conversations. The leaked image displays a padlock icon positioned next to the Archived Chats and Starred Messages icons, suggesting that locked messages may appear within this tab. This configuration hints at the possibility of adding a second layer of security to access the tab.
While the exact functioning of this feature on the Web client remains undisclosed, the Android and iOS counterparts use passcodes, fingerprints, and Face ID authentication for unlocking chats. On the Web, users might have the option of utilizing passwords or passkeys, a passwordless authentication method that enables biometric logins.
Beyond the Chat Lock update, WhatsApp Web is anticipated to receive a revamped sidebar and a new color scheme for its dark theme. The color adjustments aim to alleviate eye strain in low-light conditions, while the redesigned sidebar contributes to design consistency across various platforms within the company’s ecosystem.
Additionally, WhatsApp is gearing up to introduce new features to its mobile applications. For iOS users, the platform is reportedly developing support for passkeys, a feature previously implemented on its Android counterpart. Passkey support is expected to be available for all iPhone models running on iOS 17, providing an extra layer of security for WhatsApp, with activation limited to iPhone XR and newer models updated to iOS 17.
