In response to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) consultation paper titled Digital Transformation through 5G Ecosystem, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have recommended the formulation of a government policy to phase out 2G and 3G networks in India. Both telecom operators stressed the need to migrate existing users to 4G and 5G networks, emphasizing that this transition would eliminate unnecessary network costs and address the digital divide impacting the ecosystem for 5G use cases.
TRAI sought opinions on barriers hindering the development of the 5G use case ecosystem and potential policy interventions. Reliance Jio urged the government to establish a policy and glidepath for the complete closure of 2G and 3G networks. Vodafone Idea submitted a similar proposal, highlighting the challenge of users continuing on older technology due to the cost of smartphones.
The shift to higher network bandwidth faces challenges, including the prevalence of 2G/3G-capable phones in India and the affordability of 4G and 5G-enabled smartphones, especially in rural areas. Reliance Jio emphasized the necessity for a significant allocation of spectrum bands for robust 5G connectivity, proposing the auction of the 6GHz band, full C-Band, and 28GHz (on a flexible use basis) alongside the planned auction of the E-Band and V-Band spectrum.
It’s important to note that these recommendations from Telecom Service Providers and ecosystem enablers to TRAI do not guarantee immediate government action. If the proposed suggestion is accepted, citizens will receive ample time and support from the government to facilitate a smooth transition.
