According to a report, iOS 18 may debut later this year, showcasing a significant visual overhaul in its user interface (UI). Expected in the second half of 2024, along with advanced AI features integrated into the system and Siri, iOS 18 could mark Apple’s most extensive update to the mobile OS in years.
Reportedly, Apple intends to revamp certain elements of iOS, drawing inspiration from visionOS, its operating system for Apple Vision Pro. Featuring translucent UI elements and a blur effect, visionOS enables users to engage with content in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) modes.
The plan includes refreshing built-in apps like Safari, system menus, and popups with a design akin to visionOS. Initial hints of these changes were spotted in the Apple TV+ app following the tvOS 17.2 update.
In December 2023, Apple updated its Apple TV app for Apple TV to tvOS 17.2, introducing a new translucent sidebar menu reminiscent of visionOS. The report suggests that this menu design will extend to iPadOS later this year.
Although the accuracy of reports from The Verifier regarding upcoming Apple products or software is questionable, previous speculation from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman aligns with the notion of iOS 18 being a significant update. Allegedly, Apple is incorporating various AI features into the upcoming OS.
As Apple maintains its tradition of secrecy, no official announcements regarding software updates have been made. The unveiling of iOS 18 and other software developments is anticipated at WWDC 2024 in June, where Apple traditionally reveals its upcoming plans for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and Xcode.
