iOS 17.5 has been released, bringing a host of new features focused on enhancing privacy and security. This update coincides with the launch of the new iPad Air (2024) and iPad Pro (2024) in India and global markets. Notable additions include support for identifying unknown third-party item trackers and the ability for EU users to download apps directly from developers’ websites.
The rollout of iOS 17.5 began on Monday night, making it available for users with iPhone 15 and older models, including the iPhone XR. The most significant change is the introduction of Web Distribution for iOS apps in the EU. This allows users in the region to download Apple-notarised apps directly from developers’ websites, simplifying the process of ‘sideloading’ apps without relying on alternative app stores.
Additionally, iOS 17.5 introduces cross-platform support for detecting unknown item trackers. Through a partnership with Google, users can now detect AirTags and devices compatible with Google’s Find My Device network. This collaboration enables both iOS and Android devices to identify unknown trackers in their vicinity.
Another notable safety feature included in iOS 17.5 is the Repair State feature, which allows users to maintain Find My and Activation Lock enabled when sending their iPhone in for repair. Previously, users were required to disable these features, but now they can ensure their device’s security while undergoing repairs.
Furthermore, users updating to iOS 17.5 gain access to an offline mode on Apple News+, enabling them to browse the news tab and Today feed without an internet connection. Subscribers can also enjoy a new game called Quartiles. Additionally, the Apple Podcasts widget has been enhanced with support for a dynamic background that updates whenever a new podcast is played.
