Design and Display
The Honor 20 packs with a 6.26-inch display which is even hard to believe given the relatively compact from the factor of the smartphone. The smartphone is really comfortable to hold, and one-handed usage is not an issue either. It’s slim profile and curved edges to make sure that its fits snugly in the palm.
Honor has also gone for a dual-glass design with the help of a glass back with a mirror finish that exhibits a strong gradient effect. The aesthetics are definitely an extravagant, but the whole design is also some sort of unique, and it would be tough to miss the Honor 20 even in the sea of some other smartphones flaunting gradient finishes. For the people who are looking for a much more understated design, the Honor 20’s midnight Black model might be much more appealing.
The rear glass panel and the 2.5D curved edge display blend seamlessly with the help of a metallic rim running around the edges of the smartphone. The right side feature of the smartphone has a volume rocker and the power button with its embedded fingerprint sensor. It is a slight recessed and flat, which makes it easier to locate.
The buttons offer good tactile feedback on being pressed, but the power, according to the review, is slightly loose. If you are worried much more about how easy a side-mounted fingerprint scanner will be to use, then you can rest easy as you would not have any trouble reaching for it with either hand. It is even worth mentioning that the Honor 20’s fingerprint sensor is also extremely accurate and quick, unlocking the smartphone almost instantly.
On the top of the smartphone, there is an IR emitter and secondary microphone located. The left side of the smartphone has a dual SIM tray and the smartphone does not have any option to support the external storage MicroSD card.
Software
On the software part, the smartphone runs on the Magic UI 2.1 based on the Android Pie. On the software front features, the smartphone Magic UI 2.1 feels a lot like EMUI, down to the icon style and the arrangement of options in the settings menu. The smartphone comes with a significant amount of bloatware, which includes both the third-party and in-house apps.
Moreover, in addition to the usual suite of the Google apps, you get in house apps called HiCare for the customer service, App Gallery for downloading apps, Health for recording data that can automatically sync with the Google Fit, Honor Club, Honor Store, and Tips, plus with a host of utility apps like the Backup, Recorder, and Weather etc.
Performance
On the performance part, the Honor 20 has a Kirin 980 that is powerful enough to run anything you throw at it. Be it heavy multitasking within the 15-20 apps in the background the smartphone handled it all without a hitch. Even with the help of heavy games in the background, there is barely saw any stutters when switching between the apps.
Moreover, the care app occasionally became unresponsive for a few seconds at the time of taking photos.
The gaming experience on the Honor 20 was good. As PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9 and some other games at high graphics settings ran buttery smooth. One single is the speaker, which is easy to muffle at the time of playing games because of its placement.
The Honor 20 supports with a Huawei Game Turbo 3.0 feature, which claims to boost the gaming performance by allocating the system resources and optimizing power consumption. Moreover, Honor tells that the Game Turbo 3.0 as of supports around 30 games, both the high-end ones such as the PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, and Asphalt, as well as the casual titles such as the Angry Birds 2 and Candy Crush Saga.
Battery Life
The Honor 20 smartphone comes with a 3750mAh Li-ion battery to make sure the longer and efficient usability of the smartphone device. The battery also facilitates fast charging to make sure a swift charging of the device for further usage.
The bundles 22.5W charger takes just more than a half an hour to take the battery from 0 to 100 per cent. Moreover, the phone lacks support for wireless charging.
Camera
The Honor has a dedicated 2MP macro sensor for taking the better close up shots in the Super Macro mode, but in the real-life scenario, its performance is much poorer. The 2MP is simply not enough to capture the level of detail. Second, at the recommended object lens gap of the 4cm, the camera struggles really hard to lock focus, with even the slightest movement running a picture.
On the image quality, the objects in focus retained a good amount of detail, but the peripheral elements were not as sharp and exhibited that is also some smoothening. On the bright side, the Sony IMX586 proves to be a very capable sensor when it comes to capturing the detail.
The 16MP wide-angle sensor does a good job at capturing the wide panoramas without even losing much in terms of detail, compared to the primary sensor.
The 32MP front-facing camera takes sharp selfies with a good amount of detail. Photos which are captured under the daylight turned out to be bright, but the Honor 20 did a fair bit of smoothening without even applying the beautification filters. Low light selfies suffered from a little bit of color accuracy and sharpness, all the while showing grainy texture and patchy elements in the background.
